TOEFL 2026 · Exam update

What changed in the TOEFL?

Since January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT is shorter, adaptive in Reading and Listening, and scored on a new 1–6 band scale. Writing and Speaking now focus on shorter, more practical tasks.

The redesigned TOEFL iBT

Four skills. One adaptive test.

Reading and Listening now adjust to your performance in real time. Writing and Speaking stay linear but are shorter and more practical.

01

Reading

~30 minutes · adaptive

Academic passages and daily-life texts, including a Stage 1 and Stage 2 that route to easier or harder questions.

Adaptive section

02

Listening

~29 minutes · adaptive

Academic lectures and conversations, also split into two stages that adjust difficulty based on Stage 1 performance.

Adaptive section

03

Writing

~23 minutes · linear

Three shorter tasks in place of two long essays, including sentence building, an email, and an academic discussion.

Linear section

04

Speaking

~8 minutes · linear

Spontaneous, real-time response tasks focused on practical communication. Independent Speaking has been removed.

Linear section

What's gone

A leaner, faster test.

01

Independent Speaking is gone

Speaking now focuses on spontaneous, real-time response tasks instead of a standalone opinion task.

02

Long essays are gone

Writing consolidates into three shorter tasks rather than two lengthy essays, cutting the section from 29 to 23 minutes.

What's new

Built for how the test adapts.

New Task Types

Nine new task types appear across the test, including Complete the Words, Listen and Repeat, and Build a Sentence.

Shorter Writing Tasks

Writing is now three concise tasks rather than two long essays, weighted toward practical, everyday communication.

Score Routing

In Reading and Listening, your Stage 1 result routes you to an easier or harder Stage 2 module, which caps or unlocks the top band.

The takeaway

The redesigned TOEFL is shorter and adaptive, so how you perform early in Reading and Listening shapes what you're tested on next.

Because Stage 1 performance in Reading and Listening determines whether you're routed to an easier or harder Stage 2, accuracy early in each section matters more than it used to. Your prep should build steady early-question accuracy alongside the new task types in Writing and Speaking.

The right support can change how you prepare.

You do not need more random practice. You need experienced guidance, clear explanations, dedicated doubt support, and a preparation system that keeps moving you toward your target TOEFL band.
