IELTS 2026 · What to know

What's new in the IELTS?

The core IELTS format hasn't changed in years. What has changed is how it's delivered and marked: a mandatory black pen for paper tests, stricter Writing checks, and a growing shift to computer-delivered testing.

At a glance

IELTS 2026
PreviousPencil allowedBlack pen only

Since February 2025, all paper-based IELTS centres require a black ballpoint pen, provided at the centre. Pencils are no longer accepted.

PreviousTemplates toleratedTemplates penalised

Examiners were retrained in 2025 to catch memorised Writing Task 2 templates. A generic essay can now be capped at Band 4.0 for Task Response.

PreviousRetake all sectionsOne Skill Retake

Since 2023, computer-delivered candidates can retake a single underperforming section within 60 days instead of the full test.

4

Sections tested

Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, weighted equally.

2h 45m

Total testing time

Listening, Reading, and Writing run back to back on the same day.

1–9

Band scale

No pass or fail — institutions set their own minimum band requirements.

The IELTS format

Four skills. One band score.

Listening and Speaking are identical for every candidate. Reading and Writing differ depending on whether you sit Academic or General Training.

01

Listening

30 minutes · 40 questions

Four recorded sections covering everyday and academic situations, testing comprehension of spoken English at natural speed.

Same for all candidates

02

Reading

60 minutes · 40 questions

Three long passages, sourced from books, journals, and newspapers. Content and question types differ between Academic and General Training.

Academic / General differs

03

Writing

60 minutes · 2 tasks

Task 1 (a report or letter) and Task 2 (an essay), with Task 2 carrying more weight toward the section band score.

Academic / General differs

04

Speaking

11–14 minutes · 3 parts

A face-to-face conversation covering introduction, a long turn on a given topic, and a discussion that extends the topic further.

Same for all candidates

What's gone

Less room for shortcuts.

01

Pencils on paper-based tests

Since February 2025, only the black pen provided at the centre is accepted for paper-based candidates.

02

Passing off memorised essays

Retrained examiners now cap Task Response at Band 4.0 for essays that read like a generic template rather than a genuine response to the prompt.

What's new

Built around real skill.

Mostly Computer-Delivered

Computer-delivered IELTS is now the default at most centres, with paper-based testing being phased out at many locations through 2026.

Faster Computer Results

Computer-delivered results typically arrive in 3–5 days, compared with around 13 days for paper-based tests.

Same Band Scale, Stricter Marking

The 1–9 band scale and section structure are unchanged, but Writing is now marked with tighter scrutiny of genuine, on-topic responses.

The takeaway

The IELTS format is stable, but the margin for generic answers and memorised writing has gotten smaller.

Because examiners are now trained to spot templated writing, and results move faster on computer-delivered tests, your prep should build genuine, flexible responses rather than memorised structures — and decide early whether you'll test on paper or on computer.

The right support can change how you prepare.

You do not need more random practice. You need experienced guidance, clear explanations, dedicated doubt support, and a preparation system that keeps moving you toward your target IELTS band.

IELTS Course Curriculum

What You'll Learn

A structured IELTS preparation program covering Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking, and the strategies needed to perform confidently across both Academic and General Training formats.

  • Initial IELTS diagnostic covering Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking
  • Detailed performance analysis to identify concept gaps, accuracy issues, pacing problems, and weak question types
  • Personalized learning plan based on your current performance, target IELTS band, test date, and available preparation time
  • Introduction to the IELTS format, Academic vs General Training differences, section timing, and the 1–9 band scale

Core Areas

  • Four recorded sections covering everyday conversations, monologues, and academic discussions
  • Form completion, note completion, map and diagram labelling, and multiple-choice question types
  • Identifying paraphrasing, distractors, and answers that come before or after the stated cue
  • Understanding speaker attitude, tone, and stress in natural, unscripted-sounding speech

Approach

  • Build the habit of previewing questions before each section begins
  • Practise spelling, numbers, and common word forms that are frequently tested
  • On computer-delivered tests, practise typing answers directly with only two minutes to review
  • Timed listening drills across all four section types to build stamina and accuracy

Core Areas

  • Three long passages per test, with content and question types differing between Academic and General Training
  • True/False/Not Given, Yes/No/Not Given, matching headings, and sentence completion questions
  • Skimming for gist, scanning for specific information, and identifying writer's opinion versus fact
  • Vocabulary in context and understanding how paraphrased questions map back to the passage

Approach

  • Practise strict 60-minute pacing across three passages with no extra transfer time
  • Learn to distinguish 'Not Given' from 'False' with confidence, a common source of lost marks
  • Build passage-specific strategies depending on whether you're preparing for Academic or General Training
  • Timed reading sets that mirror the real test's mix of question types

Core Areas

  • Task 1: describing a graph, chart, or process (Academic) or writing a letter (General Training)
  • Task 2: a structured essay responding directly to the given prompt, which carries more weight than Task 1
  • Task Achievement/Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy
  • Building genuine, prompt-specific responses rather than memorised templates, which examiners now penalise

Approach

  • Learn a flexible essay structure that adapts to the actual prompt instead of a fixed template
  • Practise Task 1 data description and Task 2 argument-building separately before combining under time pressure
  • Review sample responses against the official band descriptors to see exactly where marks are gained or lost
  • Timed writing drills for both tasks to build the accuracy and range needed within 60 minutes

Core Areas

  • Part 1: short questions about familiar, everyday topics
  • Part 2: a two-minute long turn on a given cue card topic, after one minute of preparation
  • Part 3: a deeper discussion that extends the Part 2 topic into broader, more abstract questions
  • Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation

Approach

  • Practise structuring a clear, well-paced two-minute response using the one-minute prep time effectively
  • Build a wider range of vocabulary and grammatical structures rather than relying on rehearsed answers
  • Record and review responses to identify hesitation, repetition, and pronunciation patterns
  • Frequent, short speaking sessions that build natural, spontaneous conversation skills
  • Timing strategies for each IELTS section with pacing checkpoints and practical decision-making frameworks
  • Guidance on choosing between paper-based and computer-delivered testing, including result turnaround times
  • Understanding the One Skill Retake option and when it makes sense to use it
  • Full-length IELTS mock tests using realistic timing and exam-style conditions
  • Detailed post-mock analysis covering accuracy, pacing, question types, recurring errors, and areas requiring further practice
  • Understanding your Test Report Form and how section bands combine into your overall band score
  • Final exam-readiness plan covering timing, section strategy, review habits, and test-day preparation

By the end, you won't just know IELTS content. You'll have a repeatable process for understanding tasks, managing your time, reviewing mistakes, and making better decisions across the core IELTS skills.
